| History of Congo Global Action |
Congo Global Action began simply, with a few conversations in early summer of 2006. While grassroots movements for Darfur and for Uganda gained worldwide constituencies to raise the public’s awareness of these two crises, conflict in the DR Congo remained relatively unknown to the general public. In response, representatives of a few NGOs in Washington, DC decided that something had to be done to create a similarly active grassroots movement for the Congo.
During the first few conference calls, which involved just a handful of interested people and grew to several dozen over the course of the summer, the idea for a coalition was born that would bring together NGOs, grassroots organizations, and concerned individuals to advocate for the Congolese. These discussions resulted in a three-day conference in November, where almost fifty people representing some thirty organizations convened in Washington, DC to establish the structure, direction and goals for the newly-born Congo Global Action Coalition.
Since November, our working groups have been working away at their various advocacy projects as interest in the coalition and our work grows, with new people signing up every day. We now have members on six continents and of a variety of ages who have contributed their time and energy by attending Congo-related events and organizing events and activities in their own communities.
